This is the best casserole I have ever made...my whole family loves it. It’s quick, easy and when I serve it with a fruit salad, I have a complete meal in no time.

6 T. butter, divided

1/4 c. all-purpose flour

2 c. milk

1 c. American cheese, shredded

1/4 c. slivered blanched almonds

3 to 4 potatoes, cooked and sliced

14-1/2 oz. can green beans, drained

2 c. smoked ham, cubed

1-1/2 c. soft bread crumbs

Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a saucepan over low heat; stir in flour. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until thickened. Add cheese; heat slowly until melted. Stir in almonds; set aside. Arrange potato slices in a greased 2-quart casserole dish; top with green beans. Pour half of cheese mixture over green beans; top with ham and remaining cheese mixture. Melt remaining butter and toss with bread crumbs; sprinkle crumbs over casserole. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes, or until crumbs are lightly golden. Serves 6 to 8.

An edible, glittery garnish...roll grapes, strawberries and blueberries in extra-fine sugar. Kids will eat ’em up!
