CHAPTER 3

GMAT Diagnostic Test

How to Take This Test

To take Practice Test 1 (Diagnostic Test), log in to your online resources at kaptest.com/login. (If you have not yet registered your book, go to kaptest.com/moreonline to do so.)

Before taking the diagnostic test, find a quiet place where you can work without interruptions for a little over 3 hours. If you cannot set aside this much time in a block, you can take the test in multiple sessions by using the Suspend button. However, this button will not be available during the actual test, so your experience will be more test-like—and you’ll build more mental endurance—if you take the entire test in one sitting.

Make sure you have a comfortable desk, scratch paper or an erasable noteboard, and something to write with. To avoid a frustrating experience, use a strong internet connection; a weak connection can cause the test to think you’ve quit. Close all other apps on your device and all other tabs in your browser to avoid distracting content. If your device has a calculator app, do not use it during the Quantitative section, as you will not be permitted to use a calculator of any kind during this section on the actual GMAT.

The diagnostic test accurately reflects the question types and content of the GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal sections. The number of questions and timing of each section are also just like those of the real exam. And you’ll be able to choose in which order you want to take the sections, just like on Test Day.

You’ll gain several important benefits from taking this test. One is familiarity with the test format and content. This will give you context for the studying you’re about to embark on, because you’ll be able to relate what you learn to the hands-on experience of taking the test. Another benefit is an assessment of your strengths and areas of opportunity. This will provide important guidance as you plan your studying, allowing you to invest your time where it will yield the biggest score payoff.

If you have not already done so, read Chapters 1 and 2 about the GMAT and the nature of computer-adaptive tests. The information in these chapters will prepare you to get the most out of your diagnostic test experience.
