There have been many factions in the history of the galaxy. Countless governments have gained power only to be toppled by competing interests, in a seemingly endless cycle of conflict. Ever-present amid the turmoil, pirates, thieves, and scoundrels of all kinds sought to build their own fiefdoms. Caring nothing for whichever side aspired to control the galaxy at the time, these rogues operated beyond the reach of any law, according to their own codes and values.
Despite a reputation as bloodthirsty marauders, Enfys Nest and the Cloud-Riders were largely misunderstood. Unlike the five main underworld crime syndicates, the Cloud-Riders mounted operations to survive rather than gain wealth or power. They were free spirits who instinctively opposed the Empire’s draconian rule. Like many bounty hunters and mercenaries, Cloud-Riders hid their identity beneath a fearsome helmet, part of an ensemble that included a chest box vocoder that altered the wearer’s voice for intimidation and camouflage.
This helmet was worn by teenager Enfys Nest, who had taken the mantle of Cloud-Rider leader. Fashioned from bone and metal, the helmet tells its own story of survival, perseverance, and triumph. An inscription along the top reads: “Until we reach the last edge, the last opening, the last star, and can go no higher.” As well as protection, the helmet had another functional purpose: the antennae hidden in the bony protrusions on the top were vital for communications amongst the Cloud-Riders.
The circular symbol along the brow ridge that encompasses the chromed visor suggests that, at least from the point of view of the Cloud-Riders’ leader, the group was operating with heroic intentions. The dark circle with the singular point of light at its center could symbolize a reverse eclipse, a literal light or a beacon surrounded by darkness.
