Chapter 15 Violet

Sitting with Jake in the hotel bar surrounded by marble and red wood, it occurs to me that Danny has been gone for quite some time. I excuse myself from the table we occupy with a Louisiana Creole couple. They are nice folk, and hearing the old tongue is fabulous. My mother was Creole, migratin' to Columbine Spring with my dad before I was born. It's where I got my dark hair and big brown eyes from. I speak a bit of the language but never really had the tongue. As I approach the bar I see the Sheriff come walkin' in. He takes to the bar keep with a big smile. I look back to Jake, whisperin' his name. He picks up his head. He'd said his hearing was good, apparently he wasn't lyin'. I look to the Sheriff and he seems to know what I am thinkin'. After a bit, he comes over to me as the bar keep laughin' pours a beer for the Sheriff.

Jake grabs my arm gently.  “We need to move out of here. Keep calm and follow me. “

I do as I am asked. Once outside, he takes me in the direction of the Sheriff's office. “What's goin' on?”

“They arrested Danny for that incident in Columbine Spring. They have our description as well. Although mine's only height and build. They're waiting on your picture over the wires.”

“Fuck, what do we do? How do we get Danny out?”

“I'd say wait on it, cuz it was justified, but the Sheriff said that the Marshall won't be in until Tuesday. Which means...”

“She'll turn in the cell, and they'll kill her.”

“My thought's exactly.”

“We gotta get her out!”

“That's why we're heading over there. To see how to go about it.”

I follow him hoping that perhaps the office will be empty. There is a deputy, but he is sleepin' outside on the porch. Jake asks me to keep an eye for the Sheriff while he goes inside to see what can be done. Again I do as I am asked. I certainly aren’t strong enough to bend the bars or anything, but I can certainly be a good distraction if need be.
