Chapter 16 J.D.

image

Sliding in to the Sheriff's office past the lonely deputy is simple enough. I spot Danny immediately, sitting on the bench in her cell, her legs shaking up and down. For the first time ever I think she is actually scared. That pisses me off. Don’t these idiots know who she is? She is Danny Johnston, one of the best Bounty Hunters in the country! Bastards. Until the photos come in of her and Violet they will look at us all as murderers and accomplices. “Danny?” I whisper urgently. She looks up getting to her feet.

“J.D.? How did you know?”

“Overheard the Sheriff. We gotta get you out of here and bail out of this town.”

“I'm going nuts. I feel like there are bugs all over me.”

“That's the moon. It's like that the days before. I feel it too, I'm just used to it is all.” I clasp her hands as she holds the bars. “Did you see what they did with the keys?”

“Sheriff Cocksucker took ‘em with him.”

“Damn it. I had hoped he left them with Sleeping Beauty out there. Stand back.”

I grab the bars trying to pry them apart. I know I can’t do too much, but hope I can manage a little bit. As thin as Danny is, there is a good chance she can slip between them if I can get them to move. Of course it can’t be that simple. They won’t budge. I try to call on my wolf, but hear Violet talking overly loud suddenly.

“Deputy is awake.” Danny groans, grabbing the bars again. “You have to go.”

“I'll get you out. Somehow, we'll figure it out.” Chancing it, I grab Danny by the head and kiss her full on the mouth. She kisses me back fast before pushing me away.

“Go!” She whispers urgently with a large smile.

Not how I wanted our first real kiss to go, but as kisses go it is hot.

I slip out past and behind the buildings as Violet has the deputy's back to the door. Smart girl, is askin' for directions to the bank. It is the only building that doesn’t have an obvious sign from the street. Around the back of the office I find that the old movie cliché still rang true. The cell has a small high window with bars and glass at the ground level from the outside. Of course there isn’t actually any room to use a horse and carriage to pull the bars off, but if I can get myself a small oxy-cutter from one of the local shops... Cause a distraction.

“Danny, I think I figured out a way to get you out. But you gotta hold it together until tomorrow.” I whisper, but she hears me. Her nail tapping the glass behind the bars. She opens the glass sticking out her hand.

“You promised I wouldn't have to do this alone. Don't make me have to.”

I grasp her hand. “I won't.”
