Kale and I split up. Getting into the warehouse is easier than we thought. As big as the place is we expected there to be more guards, but the few that wander around are not even wolves. Just men. Men are easy to kill. Their skin splits under my claws like butter. I’ve never had to kill men before, but the ease to which it came is extraordinary. Kale simply avoids them.
I sought them out. Taking down seven men with ease. My balance form gives me my speed and my heightened senses allow me to still open doors as I come to them. I am running high, taking the scaffolding when I feel Danny’s inner voice go quiet. She is still alive I can feel that much. And Kale calls out to me in my head telling me where they are. He’s found the captive humans and is working on getting them free.
‘You need to go and help her! I’ve got his, all of the guards here ran off when the howling started!’ He seems calm, so I try to push my worry down. I hit all fours when I land on the top floor planking. It lets me move faster. That’s when I hear the shots. I follow them and spot someone hiding in the rafters, the gleam of a rifle in his hands. I know the profile. The shaggy hair white at the temples, the hawkish nose.
It is Patrick Callahan. The fucker who called us out and killed the horses. I shoot straight for him, but am down wind and before I hit my mark he’s turned his gun on me. Pulling the trigger. I feel the bullet hit my thigh and I skid to a halt. They are using silver. Must have taken the bullets Montgomery made. It is the only way they know they can stop us. The pain is searing, but I push through it, taking on my total wolf. Patrick does what any coward would. Throws his gun and runs. Turning as he does. I am slowed but not stopped. I call out to Kale.
‘I’ve been hit little brother. Get them out! I’m going after Callahan!’
‘Hit? Where? I’ll come to you, these people can sort themselves. Orion? Orion!’
I can hear him, but I was zeroed in on Callahan. I am going to kill this fuck if it is the last thing I do. As I run for him I glance to my right seeing through the beams down to the floor below. J.D. is in a tussle with what looks and smells to me like three female wolves. All in different stages of their balance. It looks like they couldn’t control their turns. Hopefully that is the case and he’ll be able to get through it. Danny is missing and there are a couple of bodies on the ground. I call out to Kale again, letting him know exactly where everyone is.
‘I’m on it. You need to stop and head for the truck if you’re hurt.’
‘Fuck that!’ I shut him out. I don’t want to, but I don’t want to hear him. It is a distraction. I need to focus. Where is Danny?
