“What are you going to do now?” It has been four days since we escaped San Francisco and I’ve made all of my reports to the Governor. Though they think I’m crazy, I know what happened and told the truth. Now I am going to be reassigned to Texas and am getting ready to leave. I just need to know that Danny and the rest of them are going to be okay. We have made our way back to Los Angeles and they are fascinated by the ocean. Violet insisted we get back here to retrieve J.D.’s personal things. She won’t just let them go off to auction. They left half of their clothes and a crib he had hand carved for the baby. Danny couldn’t handle going through his stuff so she came down with the twins to see me off.
“I’m ready to go home.” Danny answers me. The sound of her voice is sad and yet she also sounds relieved. “There’s nothing here to stay for and I have plenty of room to take them with us.” She looks to Orion and Kale who sit on the pier pilings.
“Thank you for everything.” Danny holds out her arms to hug me. I grab her and hold her hard and tight.
“If you ever need anything. You know how to find me.”
She nods with a wry smile. “I do.”
“You know that they both loved you very much and would want to see you happy.”
“I know.” She slaps my chest. “Now go before I start cryin’ again.”
