If you are not already into fitness, you might think you’re starting from a low base too. But if you can move you can improve your fitness (see some tips in ‘Finding new ways to keep fit’ here). I will admit that when it comes to fitness my mindset may be different from other people’s. Running has always been a huge part of my identity. When I was a child, I ran all the time. I ran just because I loved the feeling. I loved to put one foot in front of the other and go as fast as I possibly could. And I have never lost that childhood sense of running just for the sheer fun of it. In retirement I realized that I still loved that feeling: it was as much a part of me as being Irish and freckly! So while I stopped training at the same level of intensity according to a structured schedule, I made sure that running was still part of my life.
Apart from running, I also lift weights and stretch. I like it when my body feels strong and flexible. I’m fortunate enough to have weights in my garage and that’s where I lift. I don’t spend a lot of time weightlifting: 30–40 minutes two or three times a week. Lifting is a great way for me to stay in shape and it’s something that I enjoy. I just put on my headphones and get stuck in; it’s how I de-stress.
As much as I love running, even I have times when I don’t want to go out. Nights after work when it’s raining and cold. But I still go out the door. I don’t run very far. I go at my own pace and do whatever session I set for myself. I never regret that decision to lace up the runners and get out for exercise. I find it hugely rewarding every time. Running keeps me healthy and gets me outdoors. After a run, my mind is clearer and my mood is brighter. I think I’m a much nicer person to be around afterwards!
I loved my life as a professional athlete and I love my new life. I love learning more about food and fitness. I know the learning will continue for the rest of my life and that excites me. As you read The Fit Foodie I hope you can get excited about how simple it is to make changes in your own life. You will see that being a fit foodie is not about setting rigid rules or high-pressure targets. It’s not about stressing over fitness and nutrition 24–7. Whether you are trying to win medals, or just be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself you can be, the principles are the same – Eat Well and Keep Moving!
