RECIPE FOR A FIT FOODIE KITCHEN

As you read through my book, you might wonder how I chose the particular recipes to include. There are FIVE things I look at in any recipe before I am happy to award it the Fit Foodie badge.

1 FAST OR FREEZE

You’ll see symbols beside many Fit Foodie recipes: FAST and FREEZER.

THE FAST SYMBOL is awarded to recipes that can be made in around 20 minutes: look for this when you want fresh food in a hurry!

THE FREEZER SYMBOL is awarded to recipes that freeze well: look for this when you have the time to batch-cook and stock up your freezer for busy days ahead.

2 INGREDIENTS

Good ingredients form the base of every good meal. I seek out ingredients that are fresh, delicious and nutritious. Fit Foodie recipes are very adaptable, though, so feel free to work with what you’ve got.

3 GOODNESS IN

I try to include protein (animal or plant-based) with every meal. I keep an eye on saturated fat content. I give a quick hello to calories. Not all calories are created equal – so I don’t calorie count but I do watch out for calorie-dense foods. I increase the vitamin and mineral content of meals with fresh fruits and vegetables wherever possible. See here for more information from Olympic nutritionist Sharon Madigan, who created the Fit Foodie nutrition grids.

4 YOU CAN DO IT!

Cooking from scratch is a big part of Fit Foodie recipes but I promise you: even the most basic skills will get you through. You can do it!

5 TIME

Fit Foodie recipes tell you exactly how long it will take to prepare the ingredients (Prep Time) and to cook (Cook Time). Time is precious: we need to make the most of it.
