THREE

BOSS LEFT LUCKY’S APARTMENT and his nosey neighbors who wanted to know what was going on. He first stopped back at his room and grabbed his bags, and then dropped off his room key at the front desk with the white guy who was still staring at the small television. He then wasted no time leaving the motel, heading in the direction opposite the Bar-B-Q Pit.

Boss stepped out onto the corner of the main street. He first looked up the street and then down the street in the opposite direction and saw a 7-Eleven store. He started in that direction. Once he entered the parking lot a few minutes later, he saw a bank of three pay phones at the end of the storefront. Boss first walked into the store and grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator. He paid for it with a five-dollar bill, and asked for his change to be in coins.

Once he was back outside, Boss walked directly to the pay phones. He noticed that two of them were broken, so he reached for the third phone. He picked up the handset and heard a dial tone, and then he deposited some coins and called for a cab.

After hanging up, he stood back, leaned against the wall with a cigarette, and gripped his .45 with his right hand in the front of his jeans. Once he saw the taxi finally pull into the 7-Eleven, he stepped out toward the car as it pulled up and stopped in front of him.

“Where are we going, sir?” the cab driver asked his new passenger.

“Take me to a hotel somewhere else!” Boss told the driver, after shutting the back door and then setting his bags to his left on the seat.

Boss sat back and sighed as he looked out the window as the taxi driver drove off and away from the 7-Eleven. He thought back to what had just happened only a little while ago, and saw the entire scene play out again inside his mind.

Boss was deep in thought when the cab driver began slowing and turning into the parking lot of a hotel. He lost his train of thought once the taxi cab stopped and the driver called back to him announcing their arrival at the new motel.

Boss stared out the window at the tall hotel and nodded his head in approval, comparing it to the motel from which he had just left. He then passed the cab driver what he owed him, grabbed his bags, and climbed from inside the cab.

After the cab pulled off, Boss headed toward the front entrance to the hotel. He opened the door as two women and a little girl exited the lobby. When he walked inside, the lobby was surprisingly empty. Boss approached the registration and saw a white, red-headed woman behind the front desk. He asked for a room for three weeks’ time, explaining that he wanted a room overlooking the parking lot.

After Boss paid for the hotel room, he received a key card. He thanked the smiling white woman at the desk and then headed over to the elevator. After a few moments, he stepped onto the elevator once the doors had opened.

Once he arrived on the fifth floor, Boss stepped off and walked up the hallway in search of his hotel room. Boss stopped in front of his door and placed his key card into the slot to unlock the door. He stepped inside the room and hit the light switch he saw on the wall on this right. Once the room lit up, he shut the door behind him.

Boss quickly saw the difference in the size and condition of the room compared to the motel room. He walked over to the large bed and tossed all five bags onto it. He then pushed his own duffel bag and backpack off to the side and grabbed one of Lucky’s men’s duffel bags. He opened it and broke out in a huge smile at what he saw. Grabbing the second duffel bag and opening it made him smile even more.

“This shit can’t be for real!” Boss stated as he began emptying out both duffel bags.

He stood up and stared down at what was five pounds of White Rhino weed, which he recognized from its whitish color, as well as four bricks of cocaine and two extra-large ziplock bags filled with blue pills he knew as roxies.

Boss shook his head and smiled. He then reached for the gym bag and opened it, which revealed cash inside. He dumped out all the money onto the bed and then tossed the bag to the side before turning his attention back to the pile of cash.

“This shit can’t be serious!” he said as he began counting.

“This is what the fuck I’m talking about!” Boss stated, smiling a huge grin after counting the money from the hit off Lucky and his people, and coming up with a total of $250,000.

Boss stood up from the bed and stared down at the drugs and money all over the bed. He got control of the many thoughts that were flowing through his mind. He then dug out his Newports as he left the bed and walked over to the room window. After opening it, he lit up a cigarette that he removed from the pack, took a deep pull, and then blew out the smoke, watching as it floated out the window.

“This is my chance!” Boss said to himself after coming to the decision that not only was he not going to return to Atlanta, but he’d remain in Miami and build up his own empire.

Boss finished his cigarette but left the window open. He walked back to the bed and began packing the money back into the gym bag. After that he packed the weed, pills, and cocaine back into the two duffel bags. Boss then lay out across the bed, pulling the .45 from his waist and laying it at his side on his right. He closed his eyes to think and rest for a while.
