Dr. Troy Johnson is chairman of the American Indian Studies program at California State University, Long Beach, California. He is an internationally published author and is the author, co-author, or editor of twenty books, including Wisdom Spirits: American Indian Prophets, Revitalization Movements, and Cultural Survival (University of Nebraska Press, 2012); The Indians of Eastern Texas and The Fredonia Revolution of 1828 (Edwin Mellen Press, 2011); and The American Indian Red Power Movement:Alcatraz to Wounded Knee (University of Nebraska Press, 2008). He has published numerous scholarly articles, has spoken at conferences across the United States, and is a member of the editorial board of the journals American Indian Culture and Research and The History Teacher. Dr. Johnson has served as president of the Society of History Education since 2001. He has won awards for his permanent exhibit at Alcatraz Island; he also was named Most Valuable Professor of the Year by California State University, Long Beach, in 1997 and again in 2006. He served as associate director and historical consultant on the award-winning PBS documentary film Alcatraz Is Not an Island (1999). Dr. Johnson lives in Long Beach, California.
