IN CHAPTER 9 of Mark’s Gospel, a man came running up to Jesus telling Him about his son, who was possessed by a demon that tried to convince the boy to throw himself into fire and water. The disciples had been unable to deliver the boy, so the father begged Jesus, saying, “If thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us” (Mark 9:22). Jesus replied, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark 9:23, emphasis added). In James 2:14, Jesus brought to the man’s attention that faith without works is dead. Jesus immediately started working on the man’s ability to believe, which had to do with his spirit. Jesus turned the father’s plea for help around and said, “It’s not a matter of what I can do. It’s matter of what you believe.”
