This story began when I saw the cover image, and the author side of me said, “She tried to kill him.” That was a sure sign I’ve been writing too long.
But then, I have no regrets because with every line I wrote, every scene that unfolded, the personalities of Mason Thornhill and Casey Hearn became clearer and clearer. He’s a man’s man, who makes no excuses for his behavior and doesn’t care whose toes he steps on. She’s a strong, capable girl used to running things herself until she meets him.
Their edgy relationship was entirely unplanned. Authors often say characters choose their personalities, and I found that especially true in this story. There wasn’t anything sweet about either one of them, but then such is life. We are all different, and that’s what makes the world so interesting.

Gio twisted his shoulders, jerking himself upright, and hooked a foot around the door frame. One last try. There had to be a way out. “Sergeant,” he shouted. “Stay strong. Don’t give up.”
Don’t give up. God, help me. God. He would answer. Somewhere there was a purpose in this. But his doubts rose higher each time Sergeant screamed his name.
