Day 54, Thu, Mar 28: Christchurch

GRAHAM’S

Sunny for most of the day, clouding over in the evening

Not a day for very much. Graham was not a morning person (he spends most of the night on the net and the phone with the UK where he is an inheritance sleuth – real, and not Nigerian) & Joe had already left for work (as an intern in a hospital in town) when I got up, but I got the tip that breakfast was self-service and that there was toast in the freezer and helped myself to some coffee and two slices of wholemeal with vegemite.

Then the washing had to be addressed, which Graham was very kind about, although he apparently left the plug in the sink that took the water from the washing machine, and it overflowed all over his laundry corner. The rucksack was thoroughly dry after being stood in the sunshine for a bit and I took off to the supermarket to buy a baguette (or what looks like one) and some beef for some rolls for lunch. The processor was going through the files of the sunset series which could take longer.

Back home hung the washing up to dry and had lunch. Then it was time to drive out to the helicopter place to return the PLB and spot tracker to Michael Cameron. Just then the Flying Spaghetti Monster decided it didn’t want to start. Called Wendekreisen and they promised me someone to help start the car in 15-20 minutes, which would be too late for Michael. Got Michael on the line and he agreed to call by here. All of them arrived pretty much at the same time and although I had already handed over the safety equipment to Michael, he stayed on for a bit to see what was wrong with the car.

The problem was apparently “flooding” and once it was solved and the battery checked the Wendekreisen people moved on, but not Michael. He was quite impressed with the mileage I was getting, and I told him that I was satisfied with his company and the hires, then he was finally off to the next customer.

Walked down Riccarton Road to see if there was another supermarket at which to compare prices. (There was – Pak’n’Save – and their 150 g vegemite was 60c cheaper.) Came back here and considered whether I wanted to do a red-zone tour.

Graham had invited me & Joe to dinner of spaghetti bolognese which was very tasty and quite filling. Then I had to return to the Pak’n’Save for vegemite and some beer. Packed full this time – strange how much difference a holiday makes.
