Triangles and tetrahedrons

The triangle is the strongest geometrical shape out there and its stability has been used to make structures both ancient and ingenious. Use either of the lashing techniques on to make a triangle. Combine three triangles to make a tetrahedron – a pyramid with a triangular base.

Here are some of the things that you can make with your triangles and tetrahedrons …

Ladder

Use square lashing to attach horizontal rungs to one side of your tetrahedron.

Tripod shelter

The quickest and easiest way to make this structure is to square lash three poles together as shown in the picture. You can then cover it with a tarpaulin or foliage.

To make a stronger and longer-lasting shelter, simply make a tetrahedron that you can fit inside! A solid tetrahedron structure can also be moved by rolling.

3-D star

Lash two tetrahedrons together to make a beautiful hanging star.

Geodesic dome

Make a dome structure with 15 triangles. As well as lashing with string, you could try making these with bamboo canes and rubber bands. Make sure to dispose of these bands responsibly as they can be hazardous for small animals and use biodegradable bands if possible!
