Filtering water for drinking

This bottle filter uses a plastic bottle and natural materials in layers to filter out the big particles of dirt. You’ll still need to boil the water to kill any bacteria present. After filtering and boiling, your water will be safe to drink.

1. Collect your materials. As well as a plastic bottle, you will need any combination of the following: pine cones, fabric, wood shavings, leaves, grasses, charcoal, sand or rocks.

2. Cut the bottom off the bottle with your knife.

3. Stuff a piece of fabric into the neck of the bottle. If you don’t have any fabric, you can use a rock that will sit in the neck but not totally block it.

4. Fill the bottle in layers, with the finest materials (sand, crushed charcoal) at the bottom closest to the neck, and the bigger pieces (rocks, grass, pine cones) nearer the open end.

5. Place the filter above a clean container to collect the filtered water while you pour into the open end. Remember to boil the water after filtering if you want to drink it.
