This appendix is meant to provide a simple summary of the three strands of the Gospel—identity, destiny and relationship—and how they flow throughout Scripture.
Identity | Destiny | Relationship | |
Original Design | Mankind created in the image and likeness of God | Mankind given dominion over the earth | Intimate relationship between God and mankind |
Problems Introduced at the Fall | Image of God fractured and broken | Dominion given over to Satan | God and mankind estranged and separated by a covenant (the Law) to keep them apart |
Lost State | Sinful nature | Satan is the god of this world | Need for forgiveness; under the wrath of God |
Jesus’ Example | The visible image of the invisible God | The strongman who binds Satan and drives him out | Father-Son relationship with God |
Gospel Solution | We are crucified and resurrected with Jesus; our sinful nature is killed, and we are born again as a new creation | Jesus triumphs over the powers of darkness and reclaims all authority on the earth; we are sent out under His commissioning | Jesus is offered as the payment required by the Law for the whole world; He allows us to know God as Father |
Gospel Language | Righteousness by faith, meaning we are right in our being by trusting what Jesus did for us | Kingdom of God, meaning God’s active rule on the earth | New Covenant of grace, meaning a new relationship in which Jesus will never leave us or forsake us |
