Women’s Interests: Ironical Concession to Ideals of Feminism
Though Australia has not produced any Amy Johnsons to date, there is a redoubtable nucleus of women air pilots in the Commonwealth who are doing excellent spade work for their sex in aviation, and several of them have accomplished notable feats in some of the important air races and in solo flights. Almost daily we hear of the prominence of women in the air, and the fast-growing band of Australian women pilots is sure to contribute to the illustrious accomplishments before long. In Tasmania, Mrs. F. Jackson, the foremost airwoman in this State, distinguished herself last week-end in carrying off the major honour at the Aero Club At Home at Western Junction. This was the race for the challenge shield presented by the President of the club (Dr. J. Ramsay). The fact that women are well fitted for flying was also demonstrated in the recent learn-to-fly scholarship conducted in the South, in which Miss Margaret Henry gained first honours from an entry list which included about 100 men. The other four women entrants also come well up on the list. Many instructors speak highly of the aptitude of women in the air, so it seems that there is a definite future for them in aviation.
