Chapter 3

Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation

By now it should be clear why turtle rescue and rehabilitation is a necessity. If we don’t do something to stop the many threats that turtles face, these amazing species will be extinct before we know it.

Rescue and rehabilitation efforts are taking place all over the world. Marine turtles are protected by organizations such as the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. Turtle Survival Alliance India promotes stewardship of local species and teaches the public how to protect turtles. They are also active in conserving species through egg protection, “headstarting” and prevention of poaching. The Behler Chelonian Center in California concentrates on the breeding and maintenance of endangered species. In Canada, the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre aids in the conservation of turtles and their habitats, and focuses on the rehabilitation of injured turtles. The combined efforts of such organizations are helping to turn the tide for turtles.

Turtle rescue and rehabilitation is hands-on work.
