Food Trade

Around the world, turtles of all life stages are harvested for food. From eggs to adults, they are collected in unsustainable numbers. In Ontario, the snapping turtle is still legally hunted for food, even though it is listed as a species at risk. In Myanmar, the Burmese star tortoise has been hunted to the point of near extinction.

Pet Trade

Many species of turtles are illegally collected from the wild and transported to other countries for sale as pets. This occurs all over the world. Unfortunately, the more endangered a turtle is, the greater the price to the poachers.
