Shells are not the only part of a turtle that is prone to damage. Other common injuries involve trauma to the head, including the jaws. Fractured jaws are particularly common in snapping turtles, and require surgery to wire the fractures back together. They tend to heal very well, however.
Head trauma is also common and can cause severe problems. Only time will tell if these injured turtles can regain the function that is required for a life in the wild.
