Old in the Rain

image

As I peer out my window

Looking out to the pouring rain

I see an old man walking

To his mailbox

What I mistake for rain on his face

In reality is tears

Tears that fall to the ground like rain

Salty little drops

That mix so well with pain

The sky, darkened from the retreated sun

That went to rest Its weary head

The earth blankets the sky with those

Glorious darkened clouds in spite

The moon attempting to trickle the earth

With an ounce of Shallow light

Evil showing faces upon the smog

laughing at his pain

Outside he stands

Face gazing to heaven not afraid

The rain gracefully splashes

Off his wrinkled face

Drops trickling off an edged chin

raising old arms

winds gusting against him, yet he stands

Mail blowing out violently from steady grips

Rain drops crashing

Upon his hands

Between his fingers

cold drops squish in his clenched fist

He turns slow

Like most geriatrics do, I assume

Lightning striking tree limbs

another brilliant light

While giving its glorious

Thunderous delight

Under the powerful sky

Does he stand, fearless

With the story of life

only to share it with

Emptiness of night

The winds gust’s harder

Nature is moved

It's cold, wet

I look on confused

The thought in my head

Shit, should I do something

To my dismay the old man is smiling.

softly closing his eyes

He spins

Then in my amazement

I see a shadowy figure appear

That amazingly resembles a female

The old man still circles

As he reaches out to take hold

Knowing exactly where the shadow is

The shadowy figure’s hair flows

In the wind like silk

old fingers touch a darkened face

Hands aged in time

Embracing the cheek

My mind in a state of shock

I can only imagine what he feels

Cold, yet loved, like newborn to mother’s breast

The shadow tilts its darkened head

To embrace those old gentle hands

Feeling Every luscious detail

Wrinkled creases upon tender strength

Beautiful to the touch

The shadows hands lifting

To hold his

Cold, yet soft fingers

Fingers searching each other’s

Telling their own story

Hands that melt into the soul

Two faces embrace

My eyes take hold

My Mind simply lost in what I cannot ascertain

Her hair permeates his senses

His nose presses against her essence

His chest moves

Taking in what I assume to be heaven

His eyes open

He looks into her eyes

A glimmering green

Burst forth in light

Bright emeralds in the night

Showing every minute detail of her face

Stunningly beautiful

Her smile brings forth a new-found hope

It incapacitates his soul

They move in circles

Enchanting dancers that spin

Not one care

The rain goes unnoticed for she's here

Eyes locking

Her spirit light, captivating

They laugh as kids

Innocent lovers

His mouth to hers

Her nose against his

His forehead, pressed against hers

Tucking her head under his chin

Togetherness breathtaking

Those things, taken for granted

They invigorate them

My eyes, fixed at what is

Extremely rare

Something taken for granted in

A world lost in selfishness

Nothing that should be forgotten

A treasure everyone wants

But only the few obtain

Here she is

In her glorious beauty once again

They are one.

The earth in wickedness screeches

As if to say

ENOUGH!

He looks at her in that saddened state

For once again the time is nigh

She gently places her finger on his lips

Her head turns towards him with compassion

I witness what her lips say

"I am always here!"

Her smile

Shinning like the sun

Purest of love

He closes his eyes

As the lightning flashes

As the thunder rages

His eyes slowly opening

With childlike anticipation

only to find

He is once again alone in the rain

She's gone

His best friend, soul mate

a vision dissipates

the shadow fades

His head falls long

For only memories remain

A lifetime of love

Vanished with the wind

The mail disappears in a whirlwind

His lips quiver soft words

“I don’t want to be here!”

Staggering his way back home

Home that brought him joy

now, just an empty tomb

Full of memories.

A life of love

That is all but gone
