Margaret Houston moved to Independence, Texas. Four years later she died of yellow fever. The two oldest daughters took care of the younger children.

Two people were chosen as the most important men in Texas.

Artist Elisabet Ney made marble statues of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. The statues are in Washington, D.C.
