Camping

How you like to travel is up to you. You may prefer roughing it: Camping in a tent and sleeping on the ground while cooking over an open fire. You may have a small studio setup in your RV (or, as I do, tucked into the console of my Jeep). You may feel most comfortable in a bed and breakfast, a motel, a small cabin or an elegant old (or new!) hotel. I’ve explored most of these over the years, and they all offer different travel and sketching experiences.

Old-School Camping

Journal keeper Gay Kraeger couldn’t resist sketching this covered wagon and speculating on carrying all kinds of gear in it.

Accommodations

Sketch your accommodations! They’ll stick with you longer and make a wonderful memento. We’ve stayed at Bennett Springs many times, always in one of the three old Civilian Conservation Corps cabins built in the 1930s. I love all of them, and have sketched all three over the years. This one is known as The Governor’s Cabin, because every Missouri governor has stayed in it since it was built.

Off the Beaten Path

If you can, ask locals where the best places are to eat or visit. Get off the beaten path to avoid typical tourist stuff, and do pay attention to the wisdom of those who live there. If you can find common ground, you’re much more likely to have an interesting, unique and pleasant experience.
