Demonstration: Depicting Rocks

Try to capture the volume, as well as the color and texture of rocks. These are big, round boulders, which are quite different from the desert sandstone shown above.

Materials

paper with a bit of texture, wax-based colored pencil (like Prismacolor)

STEP ONE: Capture the Image

I used a black wax-based colored pencil with no underdrawing to suggest the texture of this boulder.

STEP TWO: Add Watercolor

I added watercolor washes directly over a colored-pencil drawing to create color and volume.

STEP THREE: Create Texture

Alternatively, I skimmed a dry brush over the surface to catch the feeling of rough texture.
