Try a Different Format

Who says you have to use standard shapes or sizes just because sketchbooks and art paper usually come in the expected rectangular format for vertical and horizontal orientation? Break out of the norm! Go for an extreme horizontal or extreme vertical. This is just what the two Dons did below, with different and creative end results.

Vertical Subjects

Don Gore excels in full-frontal views and capturing colorful buildings, from Colonial Williamsburg to downtown Kansas City. Here, he’s focused on a strong, narrow vertical subject, showcasing the red door and beautiful brickwork.

Extreme Perspective

Half a world away, Don Low goes for an extreme perspective, condensed into a similar vertical. The receding red lanterns and mailboxes invite us to wander down the narrow lane.
