CHAPTER EIGHT

Creativity First

What do you think of when you consider the word creativity? I like to think of it as being open to inspiration—being in the midst of capturing an image and suddenly thinking: I wonder if that would work or I think I’ll try this.

Maybe you’re reading a book and a word or concept sparks your interest. Maybe performance art, ballet or Irish dance makes you see in color, and you long to capture your impressions.

Whatever occurs to you, at least consider it, no matter how far outside your comfort zone it may be. Listen to your muse speaking. There’s no need to play it safe—the drawing police won’t come and drag you away. There are no rules!

Textures

Below are some of the things you can do with those “hand-y” tools—your hands! Pat your fingertips into a wash and then on paper to make a beard-like texture. Use your whole hand in a wet wash, or make little critters with those fingerprint marks.
