“We Hold These Truths…”

Once they morph into miserable teenagers, it’s inconceivable that they actually used to be innocent, fun, and loving children. One morning, over a kids’ “power breakfast” — frozen waffles and chocolate milk — I queried my four-year-old son, Jacob, on some of his thoughts about his family.

Why do you love Auntie Carrie?

Because she plays with me.

Why do you love Uncle Robert?

Because he takes me on his boat.

Why do you love Auntie LuJean?

Because she takes care of me.

Why do you love Uncle Michael?

Because he takes me for rides.

Why do you love your cousins, Rachel, Rosie, Allegra, Hannah, and Dana?

Because they are beautiful.

Why do you love grandpa?

Because he makes me laugh.

Why do you love grandma?

Because she gives me desserts.

Why do you love mommy?

Because she makes me tacos.

Why do you love daddy?

(after a brief pause) Because I just do.

In Junior High School, I learned that some truths are self-evident, like the right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. But it wasn’t until many years later that I learned first-hand that there was one more self-evident truth, just as important: love.
