Fingers are comprised of phalanges—when you bend your fingers you will notice three distinct segments. Every one of us has phalanges on our fingers. All are unique, and they can give us a great deal of insight into a person's character. The bottom phalange is nearest to the palm and then comes the middle one, with the top one being the phalange that bears the fingertips.
These will be equal in length with no grilles, crosses, or blemishes. The owners will be well balanced and successful in most walks of life. They will be hard working, kind, and spiritual.
There are usually only two phalanges for the thumb. Sometimes there can be a third but this is not often seen. The top phalange of the thumb represents willpower, the second phalange concerns logic. A third phalange would indicate an unusual type of person.
Long top phalanges usually belong to the spiritual type of person, so philosophy, religion, and metaphysical interests will be high on their agenda. They will be good at psychoanalyzing others, often scanning them with accuracy. On the down side, these people have to be careful not to become isolated or to withdraw into their own worlds, because the gifts they have been given must be shared with others to help them to understand themselves more fully. They make excellent psychiatrists, clairvoyants, or reformers of society, so they can have a profound impact on those who come into their circle. Health wise, their nerves can sometime be a problem, and they must remember to eat properly!
The owners of this type of phalange will be intellectual, witty, and positive. They will often go into higher education as they get older, maybe taking a degree or going into teaching. The world is their oyster, as their heads rule their hearts. They are law abiding and responsible and often take their attitude of responsibility into their place of work. The best professions for them could be medicine, science, business, and law.
If all the bottom phalanges are longer than the other two, the owner's characteristics will be down to earth, and he will deal with practical aspects of life very well, perhaps coming into the spiritual areas when he is older. His physical abilities will be strong, and hard work won't frighten him, as he will have plenty of energy for building, farming, gardening, and manual tasks. He prefers to follow rather than to lead and won't really enjoy being self-employed. If the palm is a fire palm, then self-employment is more likely. This person likes to be comfortable, both in the financial sense and in the sense of having a comfortable sofa and bed to relax into.
These people need to push themselves to study because learning and knowledge doesn't come easily to them. Even when reading a book, they will skim the pages or look into the back of the book for the ending. When doing a reading for this type, it is best to encourage them to take their time and be patient and then the small tasks will eventually become easier for them.
When the middle phalanges are short there will be a need to stretch the mind to improve on practical skills. Often this type will go on to be quite creative, but will need to develop patience and perseverance. They will want things done quickly, and they are inclined to be slapdash and untidy.
This type is inclined to be very materialistic, and they can make money their god. If they are not wealthy, they must take care not to get into debt. They will love the latest fashion accessories and gadgets and will like to keep up with the Joneses. The owners will need to bring action into their careers, as they can get stuck in a rut, staying in the same job for years.
This is an unusual thing to see, but when it does appear, it's most likely to be on the Mercury finger where it means that the person is good with figures, statistics, and accountancy. This person could make a career in banking, or he may spend his working life dealing with contracts, legacies, and mortgages. He could even spend some part of his life as an editor, designer, typesetter, or formatter for publishing businesses. All this is really due to an aptitude for details and for reading meaning into statistics. He would make a good staff officer in the army where an understanding of logistics is the key to success. This person could become wealthy and then spend time or money helping charities. He is kind, courteous, and fun loving.
Again this is a rare thing to see on anything other than the thumb. When it does appear, it's usually on the Mercury finger, but it could turn up on any finger. This subject has a good grasp of science, especially if the top phalange is the longer, and he may become quite famous whereby his pioneering skills could be a great help to science or medicine. If the lower phalange is the longer, the owner will have good commercial acumen. However, he will be very artistic and creative, and he should be encouraged to use this more.
Pleasantly plump top phalanges refer to a person who needs financial security and who likes to save money for a rainy day. He also craves secure relationships and will put a great deal of effort into marriage and family life. If all of the phalanges are plump, and especially if the fat is hard-packed, the individual may be fond of food and drink, and he could have a lazy disposition.
Slim phalanges belong on an active person who won't be easy going, as he has a nervous and restless disposition. Slim phalanges on the thumb represent a gentle soul who wants others to like him. He doesn't have much energy and he prefers not to do too much hard work.
This is probably the most important finger, as it relates to the person's ego, will, and desire for success, along with leadership qualities and business or teaching ability. It has extremely strong connections to spirituality, and that is especially the case for the top (fingertip) phalange. I have gone into this finger in more detail than the others.
