Six months later…
“I now declare,” the mayor said, “the Oakdale Skate Park officially open!” She cut a ribbon hanging across the park entrance.
Avani, Maddy, and Krish clapped and cheered along with the huge crowd that had gathered. Cameras and reporters for KBED News stood off to the side, recording the scene.
“We’ve been watching them build this place for so long,” Avani said. “I can’t believe we finally get to skate in it!”
“Yeah, and we’re not the only ones,” said Maddy, looking around. “I bet half of Oakdale is here!”
Dad nodded. “The park is a big success!”
“What are we waiting for?” Krish asked. “Let’s skate!”
The place was packed, but Avani smiled as they cruised through the entrance. She glided past the oak leaf sculpture in the middle of the park. The metal glittered in the bright sunshine.
“So, what are you going to do first?” Krish asked.
Avani had been back to skating for almost four months. But she had yet to try the trick that had gotten her hurt.
“Today is the day,” she announced. “I am going to try the board slide.”
Krish gave her knuckles. “You’ve got this!”
Maddy shouted, “Go, Avani!”
Avani pushed forward, building speed. She focused on the rail. She felt fearless and ready.
Avani popped up, landed square on the rail, and slid smoothly all the way down. RRRRSSSSH!
Then she jumped off. Clack! Her wheels hit the pavement.
She wobbled for a second. But she stayed on the board. She kept rolling.
Maddy and Krish whistled and cheered. Avani grinned as she swung back around to give the slide another go. She couldn’t wait to keep skating and strengthening her skills in her hometown park.
