All Mandy wanted was a cup of coffee and some peace on Saturday morning. It was a quiet day as everybody was enjoying the weekend—picnics, parties, and a day off with families. She liked weekends, sitting in solace, relaxing in the comfort of her home. She missed her friends and family back in her hometown but loved her career and new life here.
At 9:40 a.m. her cell phone rang. The screen showed her Captain David’s number.
‘Good morning, sir,’ she said.
‘Morning, Mandy. There is an emergency. You need to come to the office right now.’
‘I’ll be there,’ she said as she hung up her phone.
This was not an unusual event. Many a time her weekend had been ruined before, but she loved being an officer in the WPD Crime Investigation Department. She had developed really strong nerves from watching so many hideous crimes that anything rarely surprised her. Being good at her job, she had a promising future.
She took a quick hot shower and dressed in dark-blue trousers, a white blouse, and a long black overcoat. She tied her blonde hair in a ponytail, locked her flat, and climbed into her sedan and drove towards north where Walmtop Police Department lay just around the corner. As she drove, she was too preoccupied to notice a white car following her throughout the ten-minute ride.
Her office was on the fourth floor. As she entered, towards her left, David Brown was visible and was seated inside his office through the glass panel. He was engrossed in talking urgently on the phone. Despite the earlier mentioned emergency, David seemed calm. It was one of his traits that everyone admired. Not only his rank but his personality demanded high attention and respect. Just then she heard footsteps on the corridor. She turned around and saw Robert and James entering. They greeted each other and entered their captain’s office.
With all three detectives summoned in his office, David began, ‘The department received a call this morning. A millionaire named Adam Lancer was found dead this morning in his bathroom.’
‘Was he not one of the owners of Royal Plaza Casino?’ asked Robert.
‘Yes, he was. The housekeeper called up to inform,’ said David as he continued, ‘The crime scene officers are already there. Let’s go. His house is situated in Autumn Street.’
With that, all detectives entered their cruisers and headed east.
