Silence

Mandy got inside her flat and finally relaxed. She laid down her gun on the dining table and went to take a quick hot shower. Ten minutes later, she came back to the kitchen and pondered over what to eat. She finally settled on pizza. She put the pizza in the oven to bake and meanwhile made coffee for herself. She stood along the kitchen counter, supported by it, and sipped her coffee as she looked out the window. Afternoon was almost over. She gazed out of the window, and her eyes spotted a white car a few metres away. When she concentrated hard enough, she realized that it was the same car she had seen in the morning. The man had rolled down the windows, and she could not see clearly. Instinct told her to immediately duck, and a few microseconds later, the vase on her counter was hit. She picked up her phone and dialled a number.

James was already bored of his task when his phone rang. It was Mandy.

‘So any new developments?’ asked James.

‘James, hurry to my house. There’s an emergency,’ said Mandy.

James could hear the hint of terror in her voice.

Before Mandy could complete her sentence, James heard gunshots and glass shattering. Then the line went dead.

‘Shit,’ he muttered as he ran from his office towards his car.
