Hair loss

Hormones or genes can be responsible for hair loss in both women and men. This can be difficult to combat. But to keep your hair in a generally healthy condition, there is no need to turn to expensive “wonder cures.” Nature offers an array of effective remedies and applications that are much easier on your wallet.

Many hair problems respond well to home remedies. Hair loss that is not genetic could be a result of poor nutrition, ongoing stress, illness or incorrect or harsh treatment. In some cases, it may also be a side effect of medication.

HOME remedies

Anything that stimulates circulation to the scalp will aid hair growth and help you to avoid hair loss.

Rub your head with an onion. It may sound quirky, but rubbing your scalp for 10 minutes with the surface of a freshly cut onion is a tried-and-true home remedy. The odorous vegetable contains plenty of sulfur that aids the formation of collagen, a substance that makes hair fuller and stronger. Follow up by washing your hair.

To guard against hair loss, try a tonic consisting of about 1/4 cup (50 g) each fresh nasturtiums and thyme plus 1 quart (1 L) vodka. Let the ingredients steep in a closed container for 10 days before straining. Massage the tonic vigorously into your scalp twice a day.

Another traditional hair loss tonic mixes 1 cup (200 g) dried nettle leaves, 2 cups (500 ml) white wine vinegar and 1 quart (1 L) water. Boil the ingredients together for 30 minutes and strain the liquid. Once it has cooled, pour it into a bottle. Use the tonic three times a week.

Massage a few drops of pure rosemary oil into your scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Try alternating hot and cold water while shampooing every morning and evening. Always end with cold water, then carefully towel the scalp dry.

PREVENTION

To encourage blood circulation to your hair roots, massage your scalp with your fingertips for 5 minutes three times a day.

Avoid overstyling. Washing with excessively hot water, extensive blow drying, curling irons and curlers can damage hair. Avoid perms and hair dyes, too.

An unhealthy diet can contribute to hair loss. Avoid saturated fats and opt for foods high in hair-friendly vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, protein and B vitamins.

Beer shampoo

one Wash your hair and rinse well with warm water.

two Massage about 1/2 cup (100 ml) beer into your scalp and let it sit for 15 minutes.

three Rinse hair with warm water and massage with another 1/2 cup (100 ml) beer.

four Comb your hair and let the beer dry on your scalp. It will soak in so well that no odor will remain.
