It’s comforting to wrap yourself in a cozy throw when you want to relax on the sofa.
Whether you’re relaxing on the sofa with a good book or spending a cool summer evening on the patio, there’s nothing nicer than wrapping yourself up in a soft blanket or comfy throw.
For cool summer evenings or during late spring or early autumn, a pure wool blanket or throw is just right for wrapping around your shoulders or draping over your knees when you are feeling chilly.
• The traditional wool blanket—made of pure sheep’s wool—still has a place in many households. It’s wrinkle- and odor-resistant.
• Merino wool, lambswool, camel hair, alpaca or cashmere blankets are of especially high quality and can’t be beat when it comes to keeping you cozy.
• Don’t wash wool blankets—or wash them rarely. Always check the laundering instructions. Instead, air them regularly and brush them occasionally.
• Blankets made of polyester or fleece are easier to launder regularly and much lighter in weight than most woolen blankets.
• Cotton blankets are light, durable and affordable and are suitable for every season. And they are easy to care for: Just put them in the washing machine and the dryer.

Patchwork quilts: rich in tradition
Patchwork quilts are bed covers sewn in three sections, providing insulating layers and they are easy enough to make. For the display side, use fabric remnants to create a design. The middle layer consists of soft padding and the backing is usually plain. Quilts can be used in many other ways—as throws, tapestries, placemats or rugs.
Throws are medium-sized decorative blankets usually used on the bed or sofa. They are made from a variety of materials and come in different sizes.
• A decorative two-sided, patterned or colored throw on the sofa can quickly give a living room a fresh new look. Or use a larger throw on a bed to change your bedroom decor.
• Plain-colored blankets or throws can have a balancing effect on colorfully patterned sofas.
• If space is at a premium, an attractive throw and colorful pillows can transform a bed into a comfortable place to sit.
• Throws need to be laundered frequently, so make sure you choose one that is machine washable—and safe to put in the dryer, too.
