Chapter 12. Kort of Mödruvold and the Sea Monster

As was his custom, Kort was doing winter fishing and staying with other fishermen in a sea shanty on the shore. The shanty door locked with a lock that only opened with a key.

One night, after they had locked the door from within on the previous evening and all were asleep, it happened that Kort dreamt that a monster came into the shanty and took him by the hand. It seemed to him that he got up and crept with the monster under the bed and from there the monster forced him through the shanty wall outside, which he found very uncomfortable.

The monster then led him onto the beach and down to the tidal gauge, where he saw that the monster tried to lure him into the sea. He then dreamt that he became enraged, something he was given to do, and forcibly attacked the monster. The result was that Kort gained the upper hand, throwing the monster into the sea.

At that moment, he awoke and found himself standing at the tidal gauge in his underclothing, the same that he had worn as he went to bed. His first thought was that he sleepwalked and wandered to this point. But when he returned to the shanty and found the door locked just as they had left it the evening before. He could not enter until he had awakened his companions to unlock the door, and it became clear to him that some powers other than sleepwalking were at play and that things had actually occurred just as he had dreamt.
