Chapter 26

LEDET LET OUT A LONG sigh as he sat back at his desk with yet another cup of coffee.  He took a sip and grimaced as the bitter coffee hit his taste buds.  He should have gone out for a cup, but there never seemed to be any time lately.  This case was everyone’s top priority, but there wasn’t anything to go on.

Most of the officers went back to working other duties.  They needed more evidence to allow them to continue.  Ledet input information regarding the murders in the computer, but nothing came back that helped them.  There was just no evidence.

Several retired officers offered their time.  They helped monitor the bayous and combed through the swamplands hoping to stumble upon something, anything to help them.

They received several calls from people swearing they saw something.  Every lead was followed up on, but the end result remained the same, nothing.  He despised the calls from pitiful individuals desperately trying to glorify their name through this case.  If they only knew that each tip or potential lead had to be followed up on, and these calls wasted their resources and their time.

The thought of having to work another crime scene seemed to drain what little energy Ledet had left.  He did his job well, as did his partners, but he felt as if he weren’t doing enough.  In his gut though, he knew they would investigate more crime scenes until they finally stopped this killer.  If they were unable to stop him, New Orleans would be turned into a bloody killing field where no brown haired, brown eyed woman would be safe. Unfortunately, well over half the women in New Orleans fit that description.
