Chapter 41

LEDET SAT AT HIS DESK and looked at the pile of case folders in front of him.  He really should catch up on his active cases while they waited for some developing evidence to help locate the serial killer lurking about the streets of New Orleans.  He grabbed the top folder, laying it open amongst the clutter on his desk and flipped it open.  Needing to refresh his memory, he read the first few pages before his mind drifted back to the current serial killer case.

He felt sorry for Hutch.  It must be hard to watch someone being killed and be unable to prevent it.  As cops, they were trained to react yet her hands were tied so to speak.  She watched it happen as if she was right there, but it was only a vision.  She couldn’t literally reach out and touch the man.  Ledet wanted to get ahead of this killer and stop him before he murdered again.

He closed the file he was trying to catch up on and let out a deep sigh.  No matter how hard he tried to occupy his mind on other trivial matters, he kept circling back to these murders.

He was missing something, but damn, he couldn’t figure out what.  All they had was what Hutch saw, which unfortunately wasn’t much.  Hell, until recently, Ledet never gave much thought to the supernatural or paranormal.  However, with the last few cases they’d had here in New Orleans, he had learned to keep his mind open to all possibilities.

Somehow they had to use what information they had to come up with a profile of the killer.  The crime scenes revealed nothing forensically essential.  The killer wore gloves.  No fingerprints were found on the body or at the scene.  There were tire tracks, but that hadn’t gotten them anywhere.  Over half the tires sold in New Orleans matched that particular model of tire.  They had nothing to go on, no leads, and no evidence.  The only thing they knew with certainty was the same person committed these murders.

He had more people breathing down his neck than he liked.  Everyone wanted to know why they hadn’t stopped this killer and how many young women would be murdered before they captured this guy.
