Swimming in Stone

The primeval passage

of fish was pressed

on the ancient frieze.

Supple swimmers

thrust through

time’s dark annals,

the image is movement

chipped into light.

Now eye can bruise

against storied slate,

and hand can trace

the fossil’s fluency.

Our senses read

the Braille of rock,

then blur—

swimming in stone.
