THE SPIRITUAL STATE OF THE UNREACHED

SCRIPTURE IS CLEAR that a person must hear and believe the gospel in order to be saved. This is why the early disciples, as well as Christians throughout church history, made great sacrifices to make Christ known. Apart from the gospel, we remain dead in our sins. We would do well to reflect on the desperate condition of those who have not heard about God’s saving love in Jesus Christ.

You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

EPHESIANS 2:1-3

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

ACTS 4:12

There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
