“Krishna,” she cries, “Obeisant at your feet, I’m a victim
of desire;
When you turn away from me, the moon sets my flesh
on fire.”
Anguished in your absence, Krishna,
Radha knows not what to do;
And fearing Love’s arrows, she imagines clinging
close to you.
These words of the friend of the girl sadly separated
from Krishna
ought to be repeatedly recited;
To Jaya·deva’s song let dance the heart
that would by Krishna be delighted.
Anguished in your absence, Krishna,
Radha knows not what to do;
And fearing Love’s arrows, she imagines clinging
close to you.
4.10
“Without you she’s like a doe trapped in a burning forest,
that forest her home, that trap her circle of friends;
Her sighs fan the flames of her chagrin,
that forest conflagration.
In that forest the god of Love, playing the tiger’s part,
becomes the god of Death.”*
