Accommodation

From simple B&Bs to stylishly converted farmhouses and chic boutique hotels, Guernsey offers accommodation to cater for most tastes.

Accommodation is plentiful but you won’t find many bargains, especially if you book your hotel independently of transport. The best deals are the packages which include air or sea transport. Many of the hotels offer this option on their websites; alternatively you can do it through specialist operators. For example, Island Getaways (tel: 01983 721111; www.islandgetaways.co.uk) offer spring deals whereby the total cost for a week’s holiday in a 3-star hotel, travel included (and car hire if you pay in advance) is less than the cost of accommodation alone booked through the hotel. Rates are amost invariably cheaper off-season and there are some great deals at the hotels that remain open in winter. For rooms in July and August book well ahead. Supplements are usually charged for seaview rooms; it’s often worth the extra per night for the fabulous view you wake up to.

Visit Guernsey

The Guernsey Tourist Board brochure (available online at www.visitguernsey.com) has a comprehensive illustrated section on accommodation available on the islands of Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney. The website will also give you the latest tour operator deals. Tour companies specialising in Guernsey include Premier Holidays (tel: 0844-493 7529; www.premierholidays.co.uk/guernsey), Channel Islands’ Direct (tel: 0844-470 4937510; www.channelislandsdirect.co.uk) and Discover Guernsey (tel: 0844-415 6653); www.guernseytravel.com)

St Peter Port offers the best sightseeing, shopping and choice of restaurants. Buses from here will take you all over the island; it is also convenient for hopping across to Herm or Sark. Alternatively there are attractive beach hotels, and converted farmhouses and manor houses inland.

Old-fashioned values are still often adhered to, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get WiFi or power showers in the upper bracket hotels. Guernsey now has its first 5-star hotel, the Old Government House Hotel & Spa, and many of the 4-stars have undergone stylish revamps in the last few years.

Most places will require credit card details before confirming a reservation, and for special deals you may need to pay in full prior to arrival. VAT is not chargeable in the Channel Islands.
