94 The concern over these so-called contraceptive drugs was hardly manufactured hysteria by pro-life advocates. On June 17, 2010, the Obama administration, via an FDA advisory committee approved the new abortion drug ulipristal, to be sold in the United States under the name “Ella,” which some euphemistically labeled a “morning after pill.” The Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs approved what others call an “early abortion drug” by unanimous vote. The panel, by adopting the clever rhetorical device of redefining the beginning of pregnancy from conception to implantation, said that women could use the drug to prevent pregnancy when taken up to five days after intercourse. This formulation allowed the panel to disregard that the drug actually kills a human being. It’s not contraception; it’s abortion. In their seeming zeal to approve the drug, the panel apparently couldn’t be sure—because the drug sponsor wasn’t even sure—whether Ella could cause birth defects, or what might happen to pregnant women who take it. Despite that gap in knowledge, the committee strongly recommended not giving women a pregnancy test, according to Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. “The committee voted to deceive women,” said Wright. Advocates of the drug said the FDA would likely make it prescription only, but proponents of the Plan B drug said the same thing, which didn’t keep abortion activists from high-pressure lobbying for it to be sold over the counter, nor from pushing for sales of the drug to minors without a doctor visit or parental consent or notification.
