Genetically Modified Foods

Dr. Schoffro Cook regularly discusses genetically modified foods in her blogs and e-zine. In addition, she recommends the following books and website for more information on this important topic:

Water Filtration

There are many different types of water filtration systems, including activated carbon (such as Brita makes), reverse osmosis, ultraviolet (UV) systems, distillation, water ionizers, and water alkalinizers. They vary greatly in terms of the toxins they remove from water. Here’s a brief overview:

Activated carbon can absorb thousands of different toxic compounds. These filtration systems are available in under-the-counter models, pitchers, and water bottles.

Reverse osmosis is highly effective against bacteria, viruses, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, and most of the substances captured by activated carbon.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a form of radiation that kills viruses, mold, algae, bacteria, and yeasts; however, it doesn’t work well against heavy metals. As a result it is often combined with other forms of filtration.

Distillation removes all minerals, including beneficial ones from water. Although many health practitioners love distilled water, I’m not a fan. I feel it is essentially “dead” and may leach minerals out of the body. However, it is highly effective against heavy metals.

Ionization is a means of adding negative ions to water to enable it to neutralize toxins (as they tend to have a positive electrical charge). Proponents claim that it renders the water more usable by the body’s cells, allowing faster rehydration.
