The city outside there has no name yet, we don’t know if it will remain outside the novel or whether the whole story will be contained within its inky blackness.
But how to establish the exact moment in which a story begins? Everything has already begun before, the first line of the first page of every novel refers to something that has already happened outside the book.
The images were selected from my father’s archive without his involvement. The words above were borrowed from Italo Calvino’s novel If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller (1998, London: Vintage, pp. 14 and 153).
The project was developed during the FATHOM residency at Four Corners Film, London, in 2015 and it will be published as a book in 2018.
