piglet
hat

Pigs and piglets are some of the cleanest and most peaceful animals on the planet, never mind the most appealing. So of course I had to include a piglet as part of this collection. While I can’t guarantee the hat will encourage its wearer to adopt a piglet’s best habits, it’s sure to make its owner squeal with delight.

koala
bootees

A super-fluffy gray yarn is the secret ingredient behind these adorable bootees, which will keep little feet supertoasty while looking super-cool. As soon as I saw and touched the yarn, I just knew I had to make something koala for this collection—and I hope you agree that these fit the bill perfectly.

cat
hairband

For a slightly understated cute-creature look, this easy-to-knit hairband is the perfect choice. I’m a big fan of marmalade cats, so I’ve opted for a shade of bright orange. But the yarn comes in a great range of natural and jewel-bright colors, so there’s nothing to stop you whipping up a cluster of adorable hairbands to match every outfit.

fox cub hat

There’s just something beautiful about foxes—their color for a start, but also their elegance and their knowing look. So of course I had to include a fox cub hat in this collection. The hat is knitted in a soft wool-mix yarn that comes in some lovely shades. So although I don’t think you can really beat a red fox, you could always knit a gray fox hat for your own little cub should the fancy take you.

mouse
mittens

Is it a mitten? Is it a glove puppet? It’s a little bit of both, of course. These mousey mitts make it as easy as pie to persuade little ones to put on their gloves when the mercury dips, so you won’t hear complaints about freezing little fingers. I’ve chosen to knit these mice in off-white—but I think little mice in gray, or in pastel shades of pink or blue, would be just as cute. So take your pick.

rabbit bootees

These soft pastel bunny bootees are guaranteed to keep little feet looking good as well as feeling cozy. The luxury yarn, which contains cashmere, is beautifully gentle on the skin—but is also machine washable. Bootees are much easier to knit than socks, and I reckon they’re a great project to try if you’ve mastered simpler items like hats and feel like moving on.

big bear hat

When it’s seriously cold outside, a big wooly hat is the perfect solution. This bear balaclava is designed to fit quite loosely, so it’s really comfortable and easy to wear, and will fit a range of ages. And because it’s knitted in a super-thick yarn, the hat is one of the quickest projects to knit in this book and, even though I say so myself, one of the most satisfying. As well as a range of lovely naturals, this wool-rich yarn comes in a selection of beautiful soft colors.

chick socks

Perfect for Easter and for any other time of year, these socks are knitted in a hardwearing wool mix and one of my favorite yarns. If you’re new to sock knitting, this is a pretty straightforward pattern; and many knitters say that once they start knitting socks, they often find themselves addicted. If you want to ring the changes, knit the socks in blue for a bluebird, green for a parrot—or keep it safe and go natural.

chunky bunny hat

Who can resist a bunny hat, especially one as striking and straightforward to knit as this? Well not us, that’s for certain. What’s more, the hat is knitted in a gorgeously soft 100% acrylic yarn, so it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skins. Because it’s knitted on chunky needles, you’ll also find your hat comes together really quickly—and who doesn’t like that?

hedgehog bootees

With a snug ribbed edging to make sure they stay put, these bootees are perfectly understated and will complement all manner of cool-season outfits. I love the real hedgehog colors used here, but the 100% wool yarn comes in a rainbow of tempting shades—so if you want to go “off piste,” that could be a very good idea. Peony pink hedgehog bootees anyone?

little lamb
mittens

There are times when you yearn for something totally classic. These simple fingerless mittens, created in a wool-rich yarn with a touch of mohair, fit the bill perfectly. I’ve chosen a pale gray for this little lamb’s face, but if you want to ring the changes, I think they’d also look cute in cream, brown, or even black. And if you want something slightly less classic, how about using different colors; maybe soft blue or sea green?
