Harmlessness toward Life
set aside by resurrection’s flame on the mount of spiritual attainment.
In the meantime, let us love one another, remembering the wisdom of the apostle:
“For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
“Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not, judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
“Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant [another guru’s chela]? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God [the Great Guru] is able to make him stand.” 213
The Maha Chohan speaks to his disciples of humanity’s great need to master the art of creating peacefully. He cautions that before this can be accomplished men must undo that which they have built on false foundations through their misunderstanding of the nature of peace. He says that “as men seek to expel from their worlds the shadowed substance woven there by the misuse of the flame, as men seek to refine their inner natures and to purify their souls, they automatically renew their attunement with the Holy Spirit which beareth much fruit.
“Thus when Jesus said, ‘They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick,’ 214 he was referring to the wholeness of the Whole-I-Spirit, in other words to the completeness of the flame of peace. Those who are sick—those whose energies are not in the perfect polarity of the Father-Mother God, hence not whole—are the ones who need the transforming power of the Great Alchemist.”
The Maha Chohan points out that “self-righteousness, a shadowed weight reinforcing the patterns of deceit within the subconscious mind of man, must be laid aside as the first veil that covered the Reality of the Holy Spirit.” He also warns of “self-depreciation
whereby individuals sell themselves short in the cosmic marts and assume themselves to be nothing in the eyes of God.”
“Both outlooks,” he says, “reveal an imbalance in man’s consciousness. Self-righteousness is a perversion of the Masculine aspect, whereas self-depreciation is a perversion of the Feminine aspect of God.” Making a plea for balance on the spiritual path, the Maha Chohan explains that “harmlessness toward Life is not possible to those who remain steeped either in self-righteousness or in self-depreciation; for in both cases, by his failure to balance and correctly apprehend the energies of the Father and the Mother, the individual inflicts harm upon himself. And if he inflict harm upon himself through an incorrect application of the energies of God, how can he be harmless to other parts of Life? For is it not true that all Life is one and that that which man is he projects upon the screen of Nature?”
In applying this instruction to the expansion of man’s consciousness through Nature, the Maha Chohan advises: “The borders of God’s kingdom ought not to be enlarged with force, but by the peaceful power of the Infinite One. The statement ‘And I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me’ 215 refers to the Christ consciousness. It ought to be apparent that as man lifts up the Spirit of God in the eternal verities which he has acquired through his solar awareness, the Spirit of God in all of its tangibility will increase its action within the life of man—within a given set of squares.” He then explains the concept of the set of squares within man’s consciousness:
“If the sphere that extends nine or ninety feet around the heart chalice of a man were divided into cubes one foot square and each cube contained a certain intensity of the action of the Holy Spirit, that
intensity could vary from a pinpoint of light to a star of great magnitude. The greater the concentration of the Holy Spirit in the aura of man, the greater will be the magnet of his consciousness to draw men God- ward. Jesus taught his disciples to lift up the Christ in their service by invoking the flame of peace and its balancing action. Thus the devotee who would expand the Holy Spirit, cube by cube, around the chalice of the threefold flame as Jesus demonstrated should qualify the energies of his heart flame with the purple and gold radiance of the Father-Mother God.
“An error which men frequently make—and this involves a razor’s edge of understanding—is that they utilize the great drawing power which comes to them through the action of the Holy Spirit to attract people to their own personalities rather than to the personality of God, and to their own opinions about Life instead of to the divine gnosis, the compendium of cosmic law that originates in the flame of true Being. This state of mind cannot be considered harmless, for it is based on an unbalanced manifestation of the flame of peace and on a placing of the human ego and the human will in the seat of authority where the Christ ought to reign.”
“It is ever a wise cosmic scientist,” says the Maha Chohan, “who seeks to point out to those individuals who are drawn by the light into his orbit the divine unity that comes from the radiance of the Holy Spirit and to encourage them to expand the light of their own hearts rather than be caught up in the magnetism of anyone’s personality, including what may appear as their own. The personality-cult consciousness is a false peace and a false safety that can never lead man to self-mastery; it can only postpone the dominion of his own God Presence, of the Divine Personality in his life.
“There is a transforming power in the flame of peace when it blazes in balanced action within the heart of the individual; but when it is absent, there is danger that the maya of the human personality, with all of its glamor,* will collect as effluvia around the heart chakra in place of the radiance of the divinely impersonal personality of the Holy Spirit. When those who would serve as our representatives allow the pollutants of the carnal mind to accumulate in their consciousness, they do us a great disservice. For until these are flushed out and transmuted by the action of the sacred fire, the new light which the would-be servant invokes flows into the vessels of his old mo- mentums—like new wine into old bottles 216 —the vessels break, and the light is spilled on the ground. It is then that his consciousness becomes wide open to the forces of Darkness, who take up the light he has spilled and use it against him to reactivate the old momentums of his carnality.
“Jesus’ commentary on those who, cleansed of their evil tendencies (evil spirits), allow them to return was ‘The last state of that man is worse than the first.’ 217 In the same tradition Peter counseled the early church: ‘Of whom [of what momentums] a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.’ 218
“As long as the ego is allowed to sit upon the throne ofthe three-in-one, man’s consciousness is in a
*The magnetic attraction of illusion.
state of whoredom; for the ego is the Great Whore who usurps the authority of the Divine Mother, absorbs the uses of the flame of peace, and ties men to the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place of the Christ Self where it ought not.”
The Maha Chohan warns of “the propensity on the part of the student to rush forward too quickly into the teaching field as soon as he feels a touch of the Paraclete and the burst of light within his heart flame that marks the beginning of the expansion of his own Christ-awareness. Many who have studied a few short years fancy themselves worthy of being gurus. They seek to draw to themselves a circle of chelas, not realizing that unless they are wholly prepared by the Holy Spirit for this purpose, they may take unto themselves unduly many karmic conditions without necessarily improving the lot of those whom they instruct and of those whom they would heal.”
It is therefore the supreme desire of the Representative of the Holy Spirit in his tender regard for his disciples to assist them in developing God-awareness. He says: “In drawing the Holy Spirit to you, I urge you, whether you contemplate God as man, God as Nature, or God as God, that you retain within your mental and emotional bodies the abiding sense of being held in the very hollow of God’s hand. Then when the disquieting factors of life come and when old momentums seem to take their toll, you shall stand above these and all outer conditions and circumstances; you shall stand in the bastions of God’s own preeminence—his preeminent strength, love, and understanding.
“All around you, vibrating in space, is light. This light, which many do not recognize in their day-to-day activities and which some have recognized for a time and then forgotten again, must be persistently invoked
and adored. Men must love the light and bask in the light until they feel it and then see it. To do this they need not become materially impractical, nor should they avoid their responsibilities to Life on the physical plane. But neither should they become spiritually impractical, dissipating their energies in worldly involvements that are without purpose.
“Men must find room in the inn of being for the divine plan. They must pay allegiance to eternal verities and their faith must mount up with wings as eagles. From the platform of the present to the capstone of the future, men must not fear to study the sacred writings handed down from the past nor to follow the progressive revelations of the Ascended Masters released through their divinely appointed Messengers.
“The pure gold of the Christ consciousness can stand the trial by fire. 219 Its intent can be analyzed and brought before the eyes of the soul, and its Source can be disclosed to the sincere. Those who would pursue the Holy Spirit must give themselves without reserve to the purposes of God. Those who would become one with all Life must pursue the Holy Spirit and its holy desire to establish God Self-awareness in all who have the spark of Life within them.
“As long as any price is too great to pay, as long as any measure of the sense of possession is retained in consciousness, the disciple has not let go of his finite self with its selfishness and self-love. Man must come to the great threshing floor of God and place himself there, subject to the eternal flail of right knowledge; for “whom the Lord loveth he chasten- eth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” 220 Therefore, all who would enter into the kingdom must be willing to receive the fires of purification within the mind and heart; they must be willing to pass through
the necessary trials and take the necessary risks. God will never ask aught that is evil of man, nor will he misdirect man to do harm to any other part of Life.
“The science of harmlessness must be understood and practiced. In complete surrender to God’s holy will, men must become receptive channels through which the purifying fires of the Holy Spirit may flow.” Thus through the consciousness of the Holy Spirit we perceive that the science of harmlessness and the science of flow are one and the same and that both are born out of the flame of God-gratitude, which, as liquid fire, is released in unceasing undulation from the heart that is filled with the Holy Spirit. We see that as we are grateful for Life we cannot be harmful toward Life, for gratitude is loving God through an appreciation of his wondrous works. This is flow, this is harmlessness, this is ahimsa; this is the voice of gratitude that speaks from the heart of the flame of peace.
The Maha Chohan explains that the fires of the Holy Spirit, whence the power of purification emanates, are both actual and symbolic. “Therefore,” he says, “let none suppose that the cloven tongues of the Holy Spirit abide in the realm of symbol alone; for there is a tangible emanation of fire from the octaves of purity that is ministered unto by the purifying angels. When these angels’ wings brush the physical octaves of earth, blending their energies with the blessed fire elementals, mankind, who often entertain them unawares, 221 may experience an uncomfortable sensation in which the flesh itself seems to melt with a fervent heat. But this, too, shall pass, as will all tests, until one day mankind becomes cooled to the restless passions of the flesh and awaits a release of spiritual grace and a goal-fitting for higher and more expansive dimensions of service.
562 Chapter 7 • God in Nature
“The foundations of Life must not—cannot—be ignored by the devotees of the Holy Spirit; for the temple which is the body of man’s substance must be prepared for the infusing, the infilling, the infiring, and the descent of the Holy Spirit. Man’s body of purified energy must become a tabernacle budded without hands 222 —the hallowed, eternal biding place of God. Whether of the child-man reborn and reconsecrated in the manger of Life or of the wise master builder whose dedicated service towers above the plains, may it be said of all in harmless, harmonious rhythm, ‘Come, see the place where the Lord lay!’” 223
