Chapter Twenty-six

“So you broke up with her? But that’s crazy.” Michael looked bewildered as to why Logan would throw away a girl for no apparent reason.

Logan shrugged. “She wanted more than I was willing to give.”

“It’s not like you to be single though – have you got someone else in mind?”

Logan shook his head. “No,” he said, truthfully. After all, Wendy had pretty much avoided him even after word of his break-up had gotten around, and he was still struggling to remotely envision the two of them working as a couple. But at least there was the possibility of her coming around to some more flirting now. In the meantime, he might see if he could score elsewhere, maybe take his mind off her.

“But you must have a plan?” Michael persisted.

Logan cocked his head, “Sure, I was thinking of maybe going to watch the girls’ netball team; the year above have an open meet tonight.”

“Isn’t that just for girls?”

“Just for girls, and me. That’s my plan anyway. All of them at once, or maybe in a long line.”

Michael laughed, but he didn’t look at all sure that Logan was joking. Logan took comfort in that. At least Michael thought he was cool enough that it was potentially possible. He was Logan Moss, after all, supposedly a silver-tongued ladies’ man. It was just a shame that Wendy was immune. Or mostly immune anyway; there had been her “momentary aberrations”. He just needed to make her really mad...

“LOGAN, YOU ARE DRIVING me demented! Stop sending me these bloody books!” Wendy smacked the book into his chest as she vented her anger.

Logan looked around them – no one nearby. He’d been in a quiet section of the library when Wendy had sought him out. Was this finally it? The showdown fight that led back to kissing?

He looked down at the erotic romance novel she’d shoved at him and grinned.

“Moi? Why would I be sending them?”

“Don’t give me that innocent look.” She dropped her voice slightly. “You’re the only one that knows.”

He gave a suggestive leer. “I know many things about you, Wendy: exactly what you like, things other guys don’t know.”

“And I know many things about you, loser, exactly what you like, things that I’m pretty sure every girl in this school is aware of!”

His leer broadened. “Hey, I’m single now, I can’t help it if lots of girls want to sample the goods.”

She rolled her eyes. “And don’t we all know it. I think there is more gossip about you on the bathroom walls than any other boy ever to attend Compass Court.”

“Jealous, are we?”

“Oh please, I’m not interested in your conquests. I have a boyfriend now, and I’m just glad not to see my own name in the stalls.”

Logan felt the wind go out of him. It was true that he’d been trying to forget about Wendy by chatting up as many girls as possible, but he hadn’t expected her to move on too. And to do it better. He’d only been messing around, flirting a lot, but she’d met just one person and actually started dating them?

“Just who is this paragon who puts up with your moods?” he asked, coldly.

She gave him a chilly smile in return. “His name is Torrin Frazer, he’s in the year above, and his parents do conservation work on a reserve. Beat that.”

“Sounds like you’re more into his parents than him.”

“Oh, grow up.” She turned to leave.

“Freak!” he flung at her back, bitterly.

She turned briefly and gave him a look that was pure pity, before walking away.

He hurled the romance book at the nearest library stack, not even sure why he was so upset.
