Seventeen Years After The Stock Market Crash.

It was a cold, bleak afternoon when he arrived.

Caitlin stood by the guard at the gate. A lone figure approached through the gathering mist, which hugged their hidden valley. In her free time, Caitlin was in the habit of standing at the gate and watching.

Caitlin chuckled to herself as it had happened again today. People had commented behind her back after her polite refusal of one of the newer men. Her nickname was Ice Woman.

The tall, emaciated youth staggered as he ambled toward the gate. His clothes were dirty and his long dark-blond hair a mass of knots.

Caitlin took in a sharp breath.

“I’ll send him away, Miss Murray,” the guard said after a cursory glance at the young man.

“No, you will not! Open the gate!”

Caitlin strode purposefully toward the youth. He had piercing blue eyes. He stopped his advance, either from fatigue or uncertainty at her approach.

“Hello. I’m Caitlin. What’s your name?” she asked, despite knowing the answer.

After a moment’s hesitation, the young man replied through a dry mouth and cracked lips.

“Scott.”

“It’s okay, Scott.” She held out her hand. “Come with me. You’re home now.”
