Is it just a coincidence that the number of TV channels to choose from has grown at the same rate as the number of different pot strains out there?
Back in the sixties and seventies, there weren’t a whole lot of choices, and that made life less complicated. We had seven or eight TV stations coming through the rabbit ears, and your dealer only ever offered, like, nine varieties of weed, depending on what was around.
Today, there are hundreds if not thousands of strains and hybrids and clones, with so many different names and numbers and sources, and with new ones all the time, that it’s hard to keep track. Next time your 420 bike messenger drops in with a box of sealed plastic cubes with white tape labels, be on the lookout for some of our favorite names (listed on the next page). Not that we’ve tried most of these . . . we just like the handles.
But first, a few lines about the two main types of cannabis—Indica and Sativa. And a note that some of the new strains are hybrids that combine both Indica and Sativa qualities.
Indica
Indica plants typically grow shorter and wider, and are usually a darker-green color, than Sativa plants. Their buds are dense, thick, and aromatic. Popular Indica strains include Afghani, Blueberry, Kush, Northern Lights, Romulan, and White Rhino.
The buzz you get from an Indica plant tends to be more of a full-body, very relaxed, and soothing high that you will most likely enjoy while completely chilling out and melting into a couch or easy chair.
Sativa
Sativa plants grow taller and narrower, and are usually a lighter-green color, than Indica plants. They’re not as easy to grow indoors because they can reach heights over twenty feet. The aroma and flavor of Sativa ranges from earthy to sweet and fruity. Popular Sativa strains include Haze (several varieties), Jack Herer, Full Moon, African Buzz, Cinderella-99, and Train Wreck.
Since Sativa generally has a higher THC count than Indica, the high you get can be more cerebral, energized, creative, and social, and is probably your better choice if you’re going outside the house.
