Necessity is the mother of invention.
And if you’re lucky enough to score a bag of weed, but don’t have rolling papers, a bowl, a bong, a vaporizer, or any other paraphernalia, don’t worry—you’re not out of luck yet. Just get your MacGyver on and try one of these quick classic examples of stoner ingenuity that kicks in when necessity hits.
Tinfoil Pipe
The easiest homemade smoking device. Take a rectangular piece of tinfoil the length of an ink pen and several inches wide, wrap it lengthwise around a pen to create a hollow cylinder, remove the pen, bend one end up about two inches from the end to create the bowl, and you’re good to go.
Aluminum Can Bowl
Clean out any aluminum can, like a soda or beer can. Lay the can on its side with the mouth opening at 12 o’clock. Press down on the side of the can furthest away from the mouth opening—the idea is to create a small indentation for the bowl. In the middle of the indentation, use a pin or other sharp narrow object to poke a bunch of small holes, big enough for smoke to get through, but small enough that weed doesn’t go through. Spark it up!
Apple Pipe
You’ll need an apple (pick a hard, non-mushy one), and a pencil or knife. Remove the stem—this is where the bowl will be. Take the pencil and bore it down into the apple from the stem; stop when the tip reaches the center. The hole should be about as thick as your pinkie. Next, bore the pencil into the side of the apple (doesn’t matter where you start) until the tip reaches the hollowed center; you’ll feel it. Next, blow through the side hole until you feel air come through the top. Let the apple dry for a little bit, or apply some fire to it if you’re in a rush. Place a small bud, not shake, into the bowl, and light her up. When done, go ahead and eat that apple. Or toss it. Just don’t put it in your stash box for next time.
Bong
We lied in the heading of this section. We’re not going to tell you how to build a bong, because it’s too complicated—you’d need to have a drill, a downstem, some grommets, and a bunch of free time—and our goal is to get you where you need to be, quickly. But we can tell you how to make a quick “gravity bong”. . . .
Gravity Bong
This will be the biggest bong hit you’ve ever done.
TOOLS: A plastic bottle (32- or 64-ounce) with screw-on lid, a knife, a pin, a small piece of aluminum foil, and a kitchen sink filled with water.
INSTRUCTIONS: Remove the lid and use the knife to bore a hole in its center, about the size of your pinkie. Tear off a square of foil about an inch wider than the lid all around. Mold the foil so that the center becomes the bottom of a cone shape. Gently push the bottom of the foil cone into the hole in the lid, from the outside (not the inside where the threads are)—the idea is to create a bowl where the weed goes. Turn the lid upside down and press it on a table so the foil stays in place. Next, take a pin and very carefully poke five or six small holes in the foil bowl, making sure the holes aren’t wide enough for weed to fall through. Then cut off the very bottom of the bottle. Fill the sink with water. Fill the bowl with weed. Push the bottle, bottomside down, down into the water, stopping before the top reaches the water. Then, screw on the lid with the weed in it (note: if you screw on the lid before you put the bottle in the water, the weed will shoot out). Flick your lighter and put the fire on the weed as you slowly pull the bottle up out of the water. When smoke fills the bottle, unscrew the cap, put your lips around the lid, push the bottle back down into the water, and be prepared for a huge rush of smoke into your lungs!
